As a child I used to watch a cartoon called Underdog. He was the most unlikely of superheroes, a beagle. He had the speed of thunder and other superhero powers.
America loves underdogs, probably because our country was an underdog from the beginning. Other underdogs who won despite the odds:
- 1980 US Olympic hockey team
- 1986 Villanova Wildcats
- 2008 New York Giants
The Bible is filled with great historical accounts of underdogs
- David
- Moses
- Esther
- Ruth
Humanly speaking Jesus was the greatest underdog of them all. He was from and born in two back water towns. He didn’t possess a theological degree, never seemed to own a house, hold a job or an office. Yet his life was so historically significant that it became the fulcrum in which we date the day, months and years.
In October Immanuel will begin a new worship series where will explore and examine some of the lesser known, but equally great underdog heroes contained in the pages of scripture.
It will be a series that uplifts, encourages and challenges each of us.
